[ they fidget when he touches their feet--they're a little ticklish there--but his answer provides them ample distraction. ]
Slightly's putting it lightly. You're really odd-looking.
[ on the other hand, they lived with anthropomorphic goats; they're not here to judge what any monster looks like--so it's not really said unkindly. just a matter-of-fact way. he isn't some horribly disfigured mess, so he doesn't get made fun of. ]
What's with the... horns? Is that what they are? They're small and useless-looking. [ they motion at the things near his ears. ]
[ he promptly fumbles when chara asks about his 'horns,' almost dropping his roll of bandages and barely managing to catch it before it hits the ground. ]
Oh ... well, you're not wrong. They don't actually do anything. [ he forces a weak laugh, clearly uncomfortable with the subject and smudging the truth when he answers. ] They're just antlers. Um, we're not supposed to have them, but they ... accidentally happen, for some of us. We're called Jackalopes, if we have them.
[ a small nod as he ties up the bandages around chara's feet. ]
There. Try not to run too much, but you should be okay to walk, now. [ sitting back on his heels, he gives chara a smile. ] You did really well at tolerating the pain, you've been very strong. Would you let me look at your hands, too?
[ jackalopes are just urban myths back in their world... but then again, anthropomorphic goats. maybe they're actually real too. ]
Sure. [ they'll hold out their hands--they're probably worse off than their feet, since they were punching mirrors--then pull them away, giving lop a glare. ] Don't treat me like I'm some stupid kid, by the way. I'm fourteen. We blew the candles out on my cake and everything.
[ ...and then holding them back out to get worked on.
(don't tell them that they're still a kid. they're the oldest kid they know, so they're an adult.) ]
[ fourteen. so, definitely a child. but still, he knows that this is the age where children tend to be the most prideful and defensive. lop just gives an apologetic smile before leaning in to inspect chara's hands. ]
Right. Sorry. I'll keep it in mind.
[ he gets right to tweezing the glass out of chara's hands, handling them carefully -- there are a few deeper cuts this time, ringed with forming bruises. ]
Can I ask how you got hurt like this, by the way? I didn't see anything that would cause cuts like this on the way here ...
I got in a fight with-- [ a small hiss. give them a second. ...they're good. ] mirrors. My reflection. And stuff. They-- It sounds stupid, never mind.
[ ...yeah, they don't want to say "oh yes the mirrors showed off a really awful memory for me" because it sounds stupid. mirrors only reflect, they don't show off what isn't there..... except here apparently. ]
[ that merits a pause and a curious stare. not so much a look of disbelief as it is one of confusion. lop thinks on that for a moment -- maybe something startled the kid and they lashed out at the mirror? ]
I ... see. I can't say I quite understand, but it does sound like it must have been stressful.
[ tweezing done, onto disinfecting. lop looks up briefly, squinting into the distance before resuming, and his movements are a little quicker. ]
[ chara chances a glance into the distance as well--but sight was never their strong point, and the disinfecting makes them jerk their attention back to lop not even a second later anyway. ]
It... [ ...they don't know how to describe it, so they hunch their shoulders with a sound that probably means "i don't know" in the universal language of sounds, and concentrate on watching what he's doing. it's something they should've been paying closer attention to before, since knowing how to do this themself would be much better than having to rely on someone else, but until they had to talk about the mirrors they hadn't considered it.
...and there'd been a lot more pain. there's still a lot of pain, but this is something they've got in their mind to do. learn how to fix themself up so they can do it next time. ]
[ he can hear something moving in their direction, but it's lumbering and slow, and it's still far off. enough time that he should be able to finish up before they have to move.
he disinfects quickly, pausing only to apologize when chara's hand twitches reflexively from the sting. ]
... the mirrors are in that building, right? I'd been thinking that looked like a convenient place to rest, but maybe it was too good to be true.
[ he has to concentrate in order to properly bandage up those cuts with one hand, but he manages to get the job done with a little wrangling. placing one last strip of medical tape down to make sure the bandages won't come off too easily, lop sits back with a small sigh. ]
Stiff, but okay. [ ...considering they're bandaged up, that's probably appropriate. they flex their hands a little, wincing, and check out their feet too. stiff, but okay. ] There's probably another building we can stay in--but no, not this one. I don't like it.
[ not one bit. ]
They can't all be rundown junkyards or filled with stupid mirrors after all.
